iPods are being formatted by the machine they are being synced with. An iPod that is linked to an iTunes library on a PC Windows will be Windows-formatted, likewise if the library is on a Mac the iPod will be Mac-formatted.

But even though a Mac can read a Windows PC-formatted iPod, the contrary is unfortunately not true.
